Chemical Screen CenterUCSC Chemical Screening Center

UCSC's new Chemical Screening Center houses high-throughput screening (HTS) robotics that are used to search for biologically active compounds and siRNA targeted toward a variety of biological systems. Investigators can test up to 30,000 chemical compounds per day for biological function and/or usefulness in fighting diseases, such as cancer, malaria, Parkinson's disease, cholera.

The Screening Center houses liquid handling robotics, detectors, imaging equipment, and compound libraries. Click here to see a detailed Table of Current Equipment and Functions

The Center can be used by UCSC faculty in the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology, and Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology, as well as their collaborators. The Center is currently located in Room 339 of the Physical Sciences Building and supervised by Professor Scott Lokey of the Dept. of Chemistry and Biochemistry and managed by HTS specialist Nadine Gassner. Users must obtain an account name and a password and either be trained by the HTS Specialist or submit samples to be run for them. A fee is charged for use. To reserve screening time at the facility, please contact Nadine Gassner or visit the Chemical Screening Center website.

The Chemical Screening Center is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of State, and the California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research.
